A collaborative knowledge sharing platform can make knowledge derived from papers accessible to the broader research community without requiring those papers to be made fully open/accessible.

why not make all #COVID19 papers CC-BY? what about the articles cited by this collection? Why are those not open too? Should we not expect readers to be able to read the cited articles too?

Egon Willighagen tweets that Springer Nature claims to allow researchers have free access to all of its COVID papers but does not allow researchers to read the cited papers of these articles 

Tweet is responding to Springer Nature’s tweet about “free access” to research on coronavirus. Willighagen points out that real accessibility to scientific papers should be done through Creative Commons licensing. Willighagen also complains that the cited articles in Springer Nature’s COVID-19 collection should be made accessible too.

Copyrighted and paywalled papers are still barriers to knowledge sharing within COVID-19 research despite efforts by some institutions to make papers more accessible. Moreover, even when institutions make COVID-19 papers available, the cited literature may not be accessible. Without full and free access to all research related to coronavirus, researchers are limited in their ability to build on already existing research on COVID-19.
