* Undergoing an "out of body" experience.

When a dissociative identity disorder patient switches between identities, the following external physical signs become apparent:

* Headache.
* Confusion.
* Loss of memory.
* Muscle twitching. 
* Adjusting clothing. 
* Altering posture. 
* Throat clearing.
* Avoiding eye contact. 
* Blinking slowly. 
* Vocabulary alteration. 
* Difference in handwriting.
* Altered temperament. 
* Seeming "spaced out". 
* Shift in voice pitch. 
* Diverse functional abilities or skills.

There can be an advance plan for a consensual switch. Alters who are educated, for instance, may take charge during a school exam.

Identity switch in dissociative identity disorder is the process of shifting from one identity to another. This can appear very quickly, or gradually with noticeable signs. Switches can be triggered, forced, or consensual.

People with DID have alters, which are different identities that are independent of each other and thus, occur separately. Each alter has its own personality, set of behaviors, unique memories, and may speak a different language. Switching between alters often includes changes in behavior, including eye blinking and rolling and changing posture. Alters are theorized to stem from traumatized children not being able to form one stable identity used across different situations.
