Impact of Covid-19 on Populist Trends
The London school of economics has pointed to two potential impacts of Covid-19 on the international trend toward populism. As of July of 2020, about ⅓ of the global population lives under populist regimes. While populist politicians have handled the virus poorly and could potentially lose support as a result of health concern, the sharp economic decline could also be a factor in increasing support for populist causes. Economic insecurity is a leading hypothesis for populist support. It is however challenging to make accurate predictions of long term public opinion due to the “Rally ‘Round The Flag Effect,” which has caused spikes in positive opinion polling around the world in a wide variety of regime types.
