Impact of Diverse Methodological Flaws
Confidence in a scientific conclusion increases dramatically when a large number of studies with diverse methodological approaches converge on the same result. If studies are flawed in different ways—such that the weaknesses of some are balanced by the complementary strengths of others (e.g., the low external validity of an experiment balanced by the high external validity of a correlational study)—the converging evidence provides robust support for the conclusion.
