Impact of Incarceration on Mental Health

The prison environment can have a detrimental effect on mental well-being. The experience of being incarcerated can aggravate pre-existing psychological conditions, trigger new mental disturbances, or result in long-term disorders like PTSD and depression. This is often due to inmates being subjected to or witnessing violence and sexual assault, experiencing isolation from family, and enduring other significant physical or emotional traumas.
