Prevalence of Mental Illness in the U.S. Corrections System (2006)

A 2006 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics revealed a high number of adults with mental health problems within the U.S. correctional system. The data showed approximately 705,600 such individuals in state prisons, 78,800 in federal prisons, and 479,000 in local jails. Additionally, research indicates that individuals with mental illnesses are found in probation and parole populations at rates two to four times higher than in the general public.
