Impact of Interest Rate on Borrowing Decisions

A consumer has a fixed amount of income they will receive in the future but can borrow against it to spend more today. Explain, in terms of the trade-off between present and future spending, why a sharp increase in the interest rate would cause this consumer to choose to borrow less.
