Impaired Emotional Regulation in Depression via PFC-Amygdala Pathway

In depressed individuals, there is reduced activation in the prefrontal cortex, especially in the left hemisphere. The PFC normally helps suppress negative emotions by dampening activity in the amygdala. Consequently, diminished PFC activation compromises this regulatory function, making it harder for individuals to control their reactions to negative emotional stimuli and potentially leading to more persistent negative moods.
