Imperfect Monitoring and Firing Assumption in the Labour Discipline Model

The labour discipline model operates on a simplifying assumption about workplace supervision. It acknowledges that employers use methods like supervisors and surveillance to monitor workers, but for the model's purposes, any extra costs associated with these are ignored. The core assumption is that employers cannot perfectly or continuously track employee effort, making contracts like piece rates impractical. Instead, the model presumes that an employer periodically obtains enough information about an employee's performance to identify and dismiss a worker who is not fulfilling their duties.
