There are factors with different levels of importance that can prevent or help people learn more about the ocean. Awareness about the issue can be the biggest barrier and improving the level of awareness can also improve ocean literacy the most. In order to be motivated to teach children about the subject, it is important that the educators care enough about the subject to be passionate about it. After awareness, the most important factor in improving literacy is changing the policies around the subject. The third most important step is an increase in engagement, which can inadvertently be affected by the increase in awareness and the change in policies. The next step is improving our knowledge on the ocean and sharing that knowledge within the school system. The next step is increasing collaboration, the key to collective intelligence. The next stage would be to simply begin caring more about the ocean and moving away from only thinking of it in connection to the economy.
