While the full realization of artificial intelligence (AI) remains a distant prospect, information technology (IT) plays a vital role in advancing collective intelligence by enabling the creation of highly interconnected groups of people and computers. These networks, facilitated by email, the internet, social media, and various online platforms, represent some of the most extensive and powerful collaborations in human history. While the potential of such hyperconnectivity is vast, it remains challenging to fully comprehend its current capabilities and envision its future impact. Nevertheless, these interconnected groups hold tremendous potential for addressing our most critical societal challenges.

There are factors with different levels of importance that can prevent or help people learn more about the ocean. Awareness about the issue can be the biggest barrier and improving the level of awareness can also improve ocean literacy the most. In order to be motivated to teach children about the subject, it is important that the educators care enough about the subject to be passionate about it. After awareness, the most important factor in improving literacy is changing the policies around the subject. The third most important step is an increase in engagement, which can inadvertently be affected by the increase in awareness and the change in policies. The next step is improving our knowledge on the ocean and sharing that knowledge within the school system. The next step is increasing collaboration, the key to collective intelligence. The next stage would be to simply begin caring more about the ocean and moving away from only thinking of it in connection to the economy.

Collective intelligence results from the collaboration of many individuals. People bring their own unique knowledge base and way of thinking. Since there are many unique individuals working together, many barriers can occur that prevent collective intelligence from reaching its full potential. One main barrier to collective intelligence is a lack of awareness of a subject. If people do not consider a subject important enough, then they would not be willing to work together to address a subject. Other main barriers can result from the education system. If the school does not address a subject enough in developing coursework, then it is likely to receive very little attention in the future. For example, the ocean has often been neglected in scheduled lessons, which has resulted in a low collective intelligence in the subject, subsequently leading to some people polluting the ocean and others unsure of how to save it.

Conflict that has reached into the governmental system and involves guerrilla groups has impeded Colombia’s development, leading to a diminishing of the country’s collective intelligence and its ability to work together to address issues. The goal is to provide spaces in the city where opposing groups can resolve conflict in civil, non-violent ways and social issues can be addressed using the collective intelligence of the citizenry.
