- (3) 3D scaffolds that mimic native pulmonary architecture 
- (4) Culture methods that permit generation of an extracellular matrix (ECM) prior to viral infection to better represent in vivo conditions

Roles of In Vitro Models for COVID-19
In vitro models:
- (1) allow for better characterization and understanding of the host-pathogen interface and mechanisms of infection of SARS-CoV-2
- (2) serve as a platform for high-throughput screening of potential therapeutics for SARS-CoV-2
Accruate in vitro modeling is important to identify biomarkers that can serve as diagnostic and therapeutic targets.
