In-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in Wuhan, China Conclusions
Overall, the outcome of in-hospital cardiac arrest in this hospital was poor, as only 13.2% of patients who experienced cardiac arrest had ROSC and the survival rate was only 2.9%.
Potential explanations for these severe outcomes are that the number of critically ill COVID-19 patients exceeded ICU capacities in Wuhan hospitals and it was common for critical patients to not have the necessary equipment and monitoring resources (including staff).
Performing CPR is taxing on healthcare workers, requiring healthcare workers to change who is doing the chest compressions every minute. PPE is also complicated in these situations, because healthcare workers must have loose enough PPE to perform CPR, but also protect them against the aerosolizing chest compressions.
