Essay

Individual Incentives vs. Group Outcomes

Consider a scenario where two neighboring farmers must each decide independently whether to use a cheap, polluting pesticide or a more expensive, eco-friendly one. The polluting pesticide increases a farmer's individual yield but contaminates a shared water source, reducing the overall quality of both farms. The best outcome for the pair of farmers as a group is for both to use the eco-friendly option. However, the most likely outcome is that both will use the polluting pesticide. Analyze this situation by explaining why the individually rational choice for each farmer leads to a collectively undesirable result for both.
