Inferring Worker Preferences in the US Historical Model (Figure 3.16)

In the model of US labor choices shown in Figure 3.16, worker preferences are not directly measurable. Instead, they are inferred from the observed historical data. The model assumes that the choices made in 1900 (Point A) and 2020 (Point D) were optimal. Therefore, the indifference curves are constructed as a 'best guess' to be tangent to the respective budget constraints at these chosen points, representing the preferences that would explain these actions.
