Schemas can direct our attention, so expectations can guide what we focus on.

Influence of schema on attention

We are more likely to remember details that are consistent with the schemas that are present. If we expect someone to be a certain archetype based on our schema of them, then we will be more likely to recall details that are congruent with that schema.
