Informal and Technical Uses of Bias and Variance

In this lesson, the terms bias and variance are used as practical tools for improving a learning algorithm, not as the same quantities statisticians define. In this informal setting, Bias refers to the part of the model’s error that comes from the model being too simple or too constrained. More precisely, the technical term for this lesson’s Bias is error we attribute to bias. Likewise, Avoidable bias means the portion of error that remains above the best achievable error, so its technical meaning is error caused by the learning algorithm’s bias beyond the optimal error rate.
