Information Availability as a Cause of Illusory Correlations
Another reason people perceive illusory correlations is that they base their beliefs on the information that is most readily accessible in their memory. Even when this easily recalled information is extremely limited or unrepresentative, its availability in the mind can cause individuals to mistakenly conclude that a significant relationship exists between two events or variables.
