Forms of Injury

Trauma is considered to be an extreme form of injury or harm, one that may result in long-lasting, or permanent damage. Traumatic injuries can also be classified as such due to the expectation of a higher risk of mortality.

The health term injury, synonymous to the term harm, simply indicates damage done to or sustained on the individual.

Injury vs. Trauma: What's the Difference?

The health term, disorder, refers to a disruption to any bodily structure or function that is resultant from a disease. Disorders are specifically the abnormal functioning of a bodily system or structure. 

Disorder

The term illness refers to the individual’s feelings and experience of unhealth. This experience is entirely personal and interior to the individual.

Morbidity is a term that describes the patient as being in a diseased state, disabled, or in otherwise poor health due to any unspecified cause. It can also be used as a term to define the existence of any form of disease, as well as used to measure the degree to which the disease affects the patient.

Mortality is a term that most broadly describes the state of being susceptible to death. In health sciences, it is typically directly synonymous with death / being dead and measures incidences that relate to the possibility of dying.

The term sickness is considered an external and public form of identifying an individual as being in a state of unhealth. Sickness is often recognized as a status that is applied on an induvial by their society.

The health term, syndrome, most broadly is considered a collection of signs and symptoms. This collection then may be characteristic of or help to suggest the presence of a particular disorder, disease, or other health-related cause.

In health sciences, a sign is specifically an objective observable, detectable, or measurable indication of a presence of a disease, condition, or injury.

In health sciences, a symptom is a subjective experience or feeling that an individual may report as being abnormal to their overall health. 

Symptom (Health)

The health term, condition both defines and a describes the state of health. _A_ condition is a circumstance of health that affects the individual resulting in _the_ condition of the state of health being abnormal, which interferes with the typical activities or feelings related to an individual’s well-being. (E.g., anxiety as a circumstantial condition results in the condition of an anxious state of health). In general, condition refers to the disruption of overall health.
