Institutions, also known as the 'rules of the game,' are the fundamental determinant of an individual's power within an economic interaction. By specifying the permissible actions for each participant and how the resulting payoffs are distributed, these rules establish each person's capacity to achieve their desired outcomes when interacting with others.
