Interaction Between Frequency and Amplitude in Loudness Perception
While wave amplitude is the primary determinant of loudness, the perception of a sound's volume is also influenced by its frequency. This interaction means that not all frequencies are perceived equally, even at the same amplitude. For instance, a very low-frequency sound wave, such as one at 10 Hz, remains inaudible regardless of its amplitude. In contrast, for a sound within the typical audible range, like a 1000 Hz wave, variations in amplitude result in significant changes to its perceived loudness.
