Interspecies Variation in Sleep

The necessity and duration of sleep vary significantly across animal species. Some fish and amphibian species never sleep, and animals like giraffes sleep very little without apparent negative consequences. Conversely, sleep is essential for survival in some species, such as rats, which die after two weeks of sleep deprivation.
