IPv4 vs. IPv6

IPv4 and IPv6 represent two generations of Internet Protocol addressing schemes. IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses displayed in dotted-decimal format (such as 192.168.1.5), providing approximately 4 billion unique addresses; because this address pool became depleted as global internet connectivity expanded, IPv6 was introduced with significantly longer address lengths to accommodate a vastly larger universe of network devices.
