Irving Fisher's Physical Model of the Economy

In his 1891 PhD thesis, Irving Fisher developed a hydraulic apparatus using interlinked levers and water-filled cisterns to represent economic flows. The model was designed to demonstrate how prices depend on the quantity of goods supplied, consumer incomes, and their valuation of the goods. Fisher used this device for 25 years as a teaching tool for market mechanics, and it stands as a key example of how all economic models are used to illustrate and explore the workings of an economy.
