Many patients reported that they would withdraw socially because of the pain and/or the fear of pain.
It is also reported that the presence of friends and family can have an effect on a patient's well-being, patients in this study reported that even social interaction with family could be difficult.

According to one report, when patients with trigeminal neuralgia reported themes that they struggled with, the four most common were "diagnosis and support with TN, living in fear of TN pain, isolation and social withdrawal, and medication burden and looking for a cure" (Allsop et al., 2015).

Isolation and Social Withdrawal

It was reported by some patients in that study that the severity of the pain would sometimes become so severe that it would cause them to withdraw from social settings because of the associated difficulties of the pain. 
Patients also reported how they would usually refer to their healthcare consultant immediately when the pain would flare up, which thus places a major burden on the patient whenever a sudden flare up of TN occurs.
