In Section 17 of the Haft Awrang, Jami defines the Sufi state of being Ka'in Ba'in (کائن بائن). Ka'in (present/connected) refers to the soul's presence with God and the body's presence with creation. Conversely, Ba'in (separated) refers to the body's separation from the Divine and the soul's separation from everything other than God. This creates a dual existence where the Sufi is inwardly intimately united with God, yet outwardly engaged with society in the guise of an ordinary stranger. Jami explicitly identifies this state of concealing one's inner spiritual reality behind an ordinary exterior as the path of the Ahl-e Malamat (People of Blame).
