Jami's Concept of Man as the Comprehensive Whole (Barzakh-e Jame') in Silsilat al-Dhahab (Section 76)

In Section 76 of Silsilat al-Dhahab (part of Haft Awrang), Jami elaborates on the Sufi doctrine of the Perfect Man (al-Insan al-Kamil) by describing human beings as a 'comprehensive isthmus' (barzakh-e jame'). Jami posits that man is the culmination of both the divine (haqq) and the created (khalq) realms, serving as a 'summarized manuscript' (noskhe-ye mojmal) of the universe.

Key philosophical points in Jami's exposition include:

  1. Mirror of Divine Attributes: Man mirrors every divine attribute, including life, knowledge, hearing, sight, speech, will, and power.
  2. Synthesis of the Cosmos: All levels of existence—including the spiritual spheres (jabarut and malakut), the physical elements (arkan), minerals, plants, and animals—are integrated (modgham) within the human reality.
  3. Unity and Multiplicity: Internally, man is submerged in the ocean of divine Unity (wahdat), while externally, man interacts with the dry shore of multiplicity (farq)....
