In Section 96 of Subhat al-Abrar (part of the Haft Awrang), Jami expands his critique of insincere Quranic recitation to all forms of religious practice, including prayer (salat), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage (hajj), and almsgiving (zakat). He argues that any act of worship lacking absolute sincerity (ikhlas) is not only spiritually worthless, but actively brings a curse upon the practitioner. Jami defines true sincerity as purifying one's actions from the ego's hidden motives, seeking no reward or recognition, and attributing all capacity for virtue to divine grace rather than personal power.
