In Section 58 of the Haft Awrang, Jami condemns the immaturely greedy who fashion a trap out of poetry to ensnare mature and raw people alike. He opens with the image of an eternal sea casting waves of grace that strew the shore with pearls, and of the jeweler-natured true poet who discerningly pierces only the worthy gems so that they adorn the ears of the world. Against this he laments the pearl-ignorant crowd who string beads of hope and fear, naming worthless things pearls and hanging them on a donkey's tail, thereby debasing the noble gem into something poisonous and base. He closes by exhorting the genuine poet to unveil their own art and raise the worth of their own pearl rather than cheapening it for gain.
