Jami's Defense of Poetic Dignity and Critique of Contemporary Poets in Haft Awrang
In Section 72 of the Subhat al-Abrar (from the Haft Awrang), Jami defends the intrinsic nobility of poetry, asserting that verse is not inherently base or rejected by spiritually enlightened individuals (ahl-e del). He contrasts the exemplary poets of the past—who integrated artistic mastery with religious law (shar'), intellectual wisdom, and moral asceticism—with contemporary practitioners. Jami condemns his contemporaries for their ignorance and moral degradation, lamenting that they have reduced a once-sacred craft of wisdom and virtue to a tool for material greed and social pretension.
