In the second section of Subhat al-Abrar (a book of the Haft Awrang), Jami frames his own collection of verses through deliberate self-deprecation. He portrays himself as broken-hearted (شکسته حال) and trampled by the hand of time, and likens the act of composing the work to unwise fortune-telling women who merely gather a few beads. The beads (سبحه, rosary) pun on the title Subhat al-Abrar (Rosary of the Pious): the book itself is the rosary. Though he judges this rosary to be all twist and turn (تاب و پیچ) and worth nothing in the reckoning, he prays — by the glorifying angels of the heavens and the truthful souls of the pure world — that God keep it directed toward the people of purity (اهل صفا) and guard it from the hands of adversaries (معاندان). The section exemplifies the Sufi-poetic convention of humility about one's craft joined to a prayer for divine acceptance and protection of the completed work.
