In the prose epilogue of Baharestan, Jami accounts for why he ends the book despite an initial wish to prolong it. He says his heart desired that this composition would not soon reach its close and that the pen (خامه) would not rest while still pursuing its aims; yet the mirror of the speaker's nature took on the rust of weariness (زنگ ملالت) and could not be repolished even by the listener's eager approval, so he limited himself to this much.

He reinforces this with interspersed verse that urges the poet to spread out the plain of speech only while there is still delight (نشاط) in the nature of both speaker and hearer, and otherwise to fall silent. Jami then closes with a conventional gesture of authorial originality: whatever is not in the mode of verse and not ascribed to some other poet is the offspring of his own nature and the fruit of his own thought, and wherever he composed a piece he took nothing on loan from anyone's words.
