In Section 40 of the Baharestan, Jami satirizes the deficient or half-trained physician (طبیب ناقص). An anecdote describes a physician who veils his head whenever he reaches a graveyard, ashamed before the dead — for everyone he passed had been struck by his hand, and everyone he looked upon had died from his prescriptions. The accompanying verses declare that such a physician has broken the market of medicine, lifted the burden from the neck of Azrael, and delighted only the corpse-washer, the shroud-seller, and the grave-digger. Echoing a saying of the sages, the passage concludes that an incomplete physician is a plague upon the common people.
