In the epilogue of Yusuf u Zulaykha (Section 75), Jami gives thanks to God that his charming tale has reached its end despite the hardships of the age. He renders the relief of completion through the imagery of his own craft: the scales of thought are set down, the arm grows weak and rests from weighing verse, and the pen — the horseman whose mount is the fingers, carrying the black ink of Abyssinia across the white page of Rum — dismounts to lie stretched out without cradle or pillow, giving news of the absent to the present. Following its title, the section then records the chronogram (tarikh-i ikhtitam) that marks the date the work was finished and closes with a prayer for certain honored patrons, asking God the Exalted to preserve them until the Day of Resurrection. It thus gathers the conventional closing gestures of thanksgiving for completion, the dating of the finished work, and benediction upon its dedicatees.
