Layout of the Somatosensory Cortex Map
The somatosensory cortex follows a specific proximal sequential order to process sensations from different parts of the body. Based on brain mapping, this organization proceeds sequentially through the following areas: genitals, toes, ankles, knees, hips, trunk, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, fingers, and thumbs. The sequence then continues to the neck, eyebrows and eyelids, eyeballs, face, lips, jaw, and tongue, culminating in regions dedicated to salivation, chewing, and swallowing.

A neuroscientist observes that the area of the brain's sensory processing region dedicated to the lips is significantly larger than the area dedicated to the entire back. Which statement best analyzes the principle underlying this observation?
