Life Expectancy in India: Pre- and Post-Independence Comparison

There was a dramatic shift in life expectancy in India corresponding with its independence. In the last years of British rule, life expectancy at birth was just 27 years. Within fifty years after gaining independence, this figure more than doubled, rising to 63 years.
