Limitations of the New York Times Survey on COVID-19 Cases in Colleges
The New York Times survey of COVID-19 cases in American colleges is considered the most comprehensive available, but it is likely an undercount due to several reporting limitations:
- Colleges make their own rules for counting cases.
- At least 600 institutions refused to answer inquiries.
- Some colleges remove tallies after recoveries, stop counting after an initial report, or only report tests administered on campus.
- More than 150 colleges reported zero cases.
