Concept

Limitations

  1. The study has a small sample size and short-term follow-up period, relief on self-report of substance use rather than biochemical verification, and included a heterogeneous sample of participants who used both alcohol and drugs.
  2. All intervention sessions were by a single therapist
  3. The clinic had pre-screened and excluded patients who had severe alcohol or drug problems.
  4. The intervention was not designed to discuss dependence.
  5. Under-reporting of measures to identify patients (not representative of all)
  6. 38% of the patients declined to complete study screening procedures
  7. Patients in specialty psychiatric settings may have more severe depression problems than those in other contexts.
  8. Cannabis users might have been more dependent and needed more MI sessions.
