Loftus and Palmer (1974) Study on Leading Questions

When people are asked leading questions about an event, their memory of the event may be altered. A 1974 study by Loftus and Palmer demonstrated this by asking participants to estimate the speed of cars in a crash. The perceived speed varied based on the questioner's verb: "smashed" resulted in an estimate of about 41 mph, "collided" about 39 mph, "bumped" about 37 mph, "hit" about 34 mph, and "contacted" about 32 mph.
