Long-Term Correlations of the Marshmallow Test

Longitudinal follow-ups of the marshmallow test participants revealed significant correlations between early self-control and later life outcomes. Children who successfully delayed gratification tended to be more successful in high school, with higher SAT scores, better peer relationships, and a lower likelihood of substance abuse. As adults, they also showed a tendency towards more stable marriages. In contrast, children with poor self-control were more likely to face academic and behavioral issues later on.
