A large-scale, 12-year study of over 63,000 registered nurses found a significant association between depressive symptoms and death from heart disease. The results showed that nurses who reported more symptoms of depression at the start of the study had a 49% higher likelihood of experiencing fatal heart disease over the follow-up period.

An investigation involving over 700 Danish residents demonstrated a strong relationship between the severity of depression and cardiac health. The study concluded that individuals with the highest depression scores were 71% more likely to have a heart attack than those with lower scores.

A 2003 statistical review by Wulsin & Singal, which synthesized findings from 10 longitudinal studies of healthy individuals, found a strong link between depressive symptoms and the subsequent development of heart disease. The analysis concluded that people with elevated symptoms of depression had, on average, a 64% greater risk of developing heart disease compared to those with fewer symptoms.
