Low Competition Leads to Higher Price Markups

In markets with limited competition, firms face a less elastic demand for their products. According to the profit-maximization rule, a lower price elasticity of demand allows the firm to set a higher price markup (the ratio of profit margin to price) than it could in a more competitive environment.
