In this section of Layli u Majnun (within the Haft Awrang), Jami dramatizes Majnun's maturation from metaphorical, form-bound love (ishq-i majazi) to real, divine love (ishq-i haqiqi). Majnun's decades-long devotion to Layli's form becomes a veil (rupush) over the true, eternal Beloved (ma'shuq-i azal): his mouth is full of her name, yet his real aim lies beyond it, just as a lover may say 'moon' while longing for the friend's face. His intoxication comes from the wine (meaning) and not from the cup (form), so he finally flees the cup, and the roses of reality bloom out of his metaphor. The passage embodies the Sufi doctrine that the metaphor is a bridge to reality — human, form-bound love can ripen into gnosis of the Divine.
