Market Outcome of Public Health Measures

A company develops a new, highly effective vaccine. It sells the vaccine for a profit. Beyond the benefit to the individuals who get vaccinated, the widespread use of the vaccine significantly reduces the transmission of the disease throughout the entire community, protecting even those who are not vaccinated. Explain why, from an economic standpoint, the quantity of vaccinations produced and consumed in the market is likely to be lower than the quantity that would be most beneficial for society as a whole.
