Facebook as a Market

The advent of modern communication technologies has fundamentally altered market structures. In contrast to traditional markets that often depended on physical proximity, modern mechanisms allow sellers to advertise their goods to a wide audience and enable buyers to easily access information about product availability and location. This shift is particularly evident in the market for second-hand goods, where online platforms have empowered individual sellers to connect directly with buyers, diminishing the traditional role of specialist dealers.

Traditional vs. Modern Market Mechanisms

Despite the convenience of e-commerce, centralized physical markets remain essential for certain goods, such as fresh meat, fish, vegetables, and flowers. The primary reason for their continued relevance is the significant advantage they offer buyers: the ability to physically meet with sellers to directly inspect and compare the quality of produce from various vendors before making a purchase. This hands-on assessment is a crucial aspect of the transaction that is difficult to replicate in an online environment.

Rationale for Modern Physical Markets

Alfred Marshall (1842–1924) was a highly influential economist and a key founder of the neoclassical school of economics, whose work was driven by a desire to improve the material conditions of the working class. His book, *Principles of Economics*, first published in 1890, became the standard introductory textbook in the English-speaking world for half a century; its eighth edition was published in 1920 by MacMillan & Co. in London. A talented mathematician, Marshall advanced the study of supply and demand by using calculus to explain the functions of markets and firms. This work helped to formalize crucial economic concepts, including marginal cost, marginal utility, consumer surplus, and producer surplus. He is also noted for introducing the foundational model of supply and demand, often using the corn exchanges in English towns as a practical example. Marshall emphasized the importance of facts, and his observation that large firms could achieve lower unit production costs than smaller ones was central to his analysis. [1, 3] However, this particular insight was largely overlooked by subsequent neoclassical economists.

Pairwise trading is a market mechanism where buyers and sellers engage in one-on-one negotiation. In this system, prices are not publicly posted; instead, a customer typically inspects the available goods and then asks a seller for a price, which starts the bargaining process.

Exchange is the act of giving one thing and receiving another in return. In an economic context, it is the fundamental activity that occurs in a market, where goods, services, or money are traded between parties.

Market structure refers to the organizational and competitive characteristics of a market. Key factors that define a market's structure include the number of buyers and sellers, the degree of product differentiation, and the ease of entry and exit for firms. These characteristics determine the level of competition and influence pricing and output decisions.

Ouchi seeks to develop a theoretical framework that predicts what sort of form organizations will take on under certain external conditions.  Under this framework, two main criterion, what he calls transaction costs, affect the form of an organization: goal incongruence and performance ambiguity.  He identifies three types of forms that organizations can take depending on their levels of these transaction costs: Markets, bureaucracies, and clans.  Ouchi ultimately argues for a framework that can evaluate the nature and efficiency criterion of organizations, and how those organizations operate within an economic landscape of transactions.

Nature of Organizations

While cooperation is of singular importance to the success of an organization, it is often difficult to achieve.  This is because the goals of an organization are not always shared by the individuals who are the members of that organization.  Bridging any gap between the organizations goals and the individuals is the primary challenge of any enterprise, and transaction costs solve the problem of cooperation.  Transaction costs are simply any activity in which two parties engage in to exchange anything of value that is needed by the other side.  Satisfying the need for an equitable exchange where both parties feel that have gained something of equitable values ensures the continued interdependence of an organization which leads to cooperation among its members, and hence a more unified adherence to a common goal.

Bureaucratic relationships have several advantages over market ones.  Firstly, it utilizes the employment relationship where actors accept wages in exchange for services that can be monitored and managed by superiors within that organization.  This minimizes the trust and opiumism problems that markets suffer from.  Members in a bureaucratic organization typically have closer, longer term interactions with each other and have metrics to reward or punish work performance, which reduces goal incongruence.  Bureaucratic organizations also have an advantage of determining value of labor, products, and services because the environment in which those things are exchanged in are on a smaller scale and more tightly controlled as it operates according to a system of hierarchical surveillance, evaluation, and direction.

Bureaucracies 

Clans operate at the smallest scale of an organization but are ideal for situations where transaction costs and goal orientation are highly unique, ambiguous or in flux. Bucerotid organizations only work if all members trust and perceive that superiors are distributing resources in a fair and equitable way, but clans function more effectively when performance evaluation ambiguity is high and goal incongruence is low, meaning that members of a clan have high rates of cooperating towards the same goals, and a high rate of interpersonal trust and immersion/integration.
