The fourth scale of the MBTI describes generally how individuals handle the world around them. Judgers prefer a structural, more orderly life with clear boundaries. Perceivers are more spontaneous, and strive for flexibility.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. It measures individuals’ preferred manner of interacting with the world using four dichotomous scales, making up 16 possible personality types. The personality types are represented by four letters that indicate an individual’s preference on each of the scales. The four scales are: 
- Extraversion-introversion 
- Sensing-intuition 
- Thinking-feeling
- Judging-perceiving

The extraversion-introversion scale on the MBTI describes where individuals derive their energy. Extraverts get their energy from the outer world, and tend to focus on external experiences. Introverts, on the other hand, focus on deriving their energy from inner experiences. They prefer to spend more time alone.

The sensing-intuition scale describes how individuals process information. Sensors focus on observable, factual information obtained from the senses. Intuitives, on the other hand, perceive the world through meanings and relationships. They focus on more subjective information, which allows them to process complex experiences.

The MBTI's thinking-feeling scale evaluates how an individual makes decisions. Thinkers rely heavily on logics and factual information when making a judgement. On the other end of the scale, feelers tend to place more emphasis on personal values and emotions.

Personality Traits in Distance Learning

- 72 graduate students at two universities took blended (hybrid) or asynchronous online courses, then completed a personality assessment and course satisfaction survey.
- Courses used either Blackboard or eCollege as online learning tools. 
- The independent variables were learning environment as well as personality type, measured by a 72-question online version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. 
- The dependent variable was student satisfaction, measured by an online survey. 
- Participants took both the MBTI and satisfaction survey at the end of the semester.
