Concept

Measuring discourse-level processes with verbal protocols and latent semantic analysis - latent semantic analysis (LSA)

  • Used to study verbal protocols from readers explaining or recording their thoughts as they read
  • Uses singular value decomposition to get a condensed matrix for comparing similarities and differences between words in a passage or larger chunks of text
  • Similarities between units of text (could be a few words, paragraphs, or sentences) are indicated by the cosine between corresponding, normalized vectors
  • Cosines of 0 indicate no similarity and 1 means high similarity
  • Assumes that similar words appear in similar contexts
