Mechanism of Implied Fixed Exchange Rates

Before the adoption of a common currency, the exchange rate between Country A's currency and Country B's currency could fluctuate daily. After both countries adopted the new common currency, each at a permanently fixed conversion rate, the exchange rate between their old currencies also became permanently fixed. Explain the economic mechanism that caused this to happen.
