Medial Preoptic Area

The medial preoptic area is a region of the hypothalamus that plays a crucial role in sexual behavior. Animal research demonstrates that lesions to this specific area can completely disrupt the physical ability to engage in sexual behavior, such as observed in male rats. However, these lesions do not diminish the motivation to seek out a sexually receptive partner. This finding suggests that the physical ability to engage in sexual behavior and the psychological motivation to do so are likely mediated by distinct neural systems.
