Metformin Usage Effects in Individuals with COVID-19 and Pre-Existing Type 2 Diabetes

Metformin is the most common drug administered to individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), so it is crucial to understand any potential effects that being infected with COVID-19 might have on metformin use in people with T2D.

Researchers conducted a retrospective study that included 1,213 hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 and T2D to determine the effect of metformin upon being infected with COVID-19. It was found that there was a significantly higher level of acidosis upon using metformin in the individuals, especially in those suffering from severe COVID-19. However, metformin use did not seem to be associated with COVID-19 related mortality. Additionally, metformin use appeared to lead to a significant reduction in inflammation and heart failure. These findings indicate that the use of metformin should be continued in patients with COVID-19 and pre-existing T2D, but kidney functioning and incidence of acidosis should be cautiously monitored.
